The Royal Oak, Bishopstone
The pub with its own organic farm. And accolades in 2009 and 2010 from The Good Food Guide, The Good Pub Guide, Michelin Eating out in Pubs.
The New York Times says ‘outstanding pork bellies’; The Times (London!) on line says one of the ‘top ten pubs in England and Wales (July 2009). Chris Evans, on Radio 2 in August 2009, described Helen Browning, the proprietor, as ‘the perfect woman’. Some of us agree!

Stellar staff, great food, much of it grown on our own Eastbrook Farm and by other villagers in their gardens and allotments, very well kept Arkells beer, and an astonishing welcome are what has brought this once glorious pub back to life after a few disappointing years.
Star chef Liz Franklin has created a hearty and simple food lovers’ paradise.
A finalist in Masterchef, the author of 13 books on food, this self taught genius treats everyone as if guests in her own home. She uses and chooses the simplest freshest stuff—beef, veal, pork from the farm, veg from our own allotment, fruit and flowers from our neighbours—and puts them on a plate for you, at lunch Tuesday to Sunday, and supper Monday to Sunday.
The farm provides walking, open days and loads of fresh air and space stretching south across The Ridgeway. Walkers and cyclists, in fact all sorts, use our two simple bed and breakfast rooms out the back.
Cleaner Kate Keller, a stalwart of 27 years, spots most of the cobwebs but not all of them. Don’t give her a hard time. She’s hardly taken a day off in all the time she’s been working, and without her the place would not be the same.
Our bar and kitchen staff are almost all from this village—with one or two interlopers from Ashbury and Wanborough –and they welcome you as if it was their own front room.
We would love to see you in this amazing village with its great pub. We love children and dogs and expect you to bring some.
