The Flag, Swindon
One of the most changed areas of Swindon town centre in recent years is Bridge Street. And the pub formerly known as The Lamb and Flag, Father Teds and, until recently, Bar Cuba, is set for a new lease of life with a new name and a new atmosphere.
The Flag is the perfect place to drop in during lunchtimes when suffering from shopping fatique. But you shouldn't limit your visits to this new bar to the daytime. In the evenings, Bridge Street takes on a whole different personality - a bustling mecca for anyone who enjoys a good night out. And a visit to The Flag should most certainly be on the itinerary.
You will always find a welcome here, but the pub was not always quite as welcoming before Arkell's bought it in 1886.
Whether it was The Lamb and Flag or The Ewe and Lamb - as it was briefly known in the middle part of the 19th century - it has had a somewhat dubious reputation after the landlady, Amelia Barratt, was fined ten shillings in 1855 for being "beastly drunk" and five cases of smallpox were reported on the premises in 1871.
Thankfully, much has changed and The Flag is opening a new chapter in the building's history by offering the most civilised of surroundings for anyone to enjoy a drink.
