The Cross Keys, Newbury
The Cross Keys is one of several in the Newbury area to join the Arkell's 'family' of pubs and this is one of the more straightforward properties which has remained largely unspoilt by the passing of time.
Honest town locals are a disappearing breed and, on the edge of Newbury, The Cross Keys certainly fits that bill. It is sometimes too easily forgotten that pubs like this are as much a part of the local history as any other buildings, but a print of The Cross Keys dating back to 1890 takes pride of place among other historic pictures of Newbury displayed in the bar.
Landlord Dale Shepherd has been pulling pints at The Cross Keys for 21 years - and since May 1996 those pints have been Arkell's. It continues to be essentially a 'locals' pub, though, naturally, you don't have to be a local to receive the traditional Arkell's welcome.
